Activitism and Art Writing

Activitism and Art Writing:

I would like to make for my final intervention is to create t-shirts that discussing about the major issues with the immigration policy. I want to catch the audience attention about this issue and hoping people may join. Since I live in a city where there is high rate Hispanic population it can motivate my people to speak against this issue. This idea was inspired by Ruben Ortiz Torres who designed baseball hats that reflected different cultural backgrounds. He use these designs to proof immigrant people and diverse people in the United States. He show there are diversity in the world of sports such as baseball. Images on the caps may show people to look society different way. Caps should be expressed with culture and diversity from baseballs players or in general any sport. The cap has a discusses a huge message based on culture fashion and divided culture.

Another good idea that Ruben Ortiz Torres made was the lawnmower to resemble the Mexican immigrants working labor in California. Immigrants are usually the one who worked on labor work such as mowing lawns or any work that deals with labor in United States. This is one of the issues in immigrants deal with not able to have privilege to work in a job without proving their citizenship. This one of the issues immigrants face in America. I want to discuss this issue on my final intervention about immigrants seeking better opportunities in jobs or careers.

Another activist that I was inspired by was Michelle Angela Ortiz who worked with Mural Arts to bring “Families Separadas” project into a reality. There is a website link video that explains her creativity and messages that impacted the lives of immigrant people. Also, for my final intervention I was hoping to create a huge art piece that gives a message towards immigration families separated in detention centers. Michelle Angela Ortiz reflected this issue by putting her art work  next to city hall. Also, she painted in bold letters on the roads next to the ice detention center stating that, “ We are humans beings, risking our lives, for our families & our future.” This help  everyone to see the issue that is reflected on immigrants towards deportation. Michelle artwork did was a political activism outside of the art world she was able to unite people together no matter the age to speak against the issue.
"Eres mi Todo" by Michelle Angela Ortiz

"WE ARE HUMANS BEINGS, RISKING OUR LIVES, FOR OUR FAMILIES & OUR FUTURE." by Michelle Angela Ortiz

Another idea that I decide to create is painting to send a message to my audience towards immigrants here in the United States. An co founder of The Seed House named Armando Minjarez decide to make a painting moral with high school students. This painting mural is at 21st and Park Place. The high schoolers gave an idea to discuss about immigration. I believe making a painting can prove a point towards immigrant young teens and adults who seek the American Dream. Immigrants should be treated with the given equal rights and priviledge. Letting our audience know that immigrant should not be stand for their country ,but as human beings who desires to find a better life in America.

This Is What I Know About Art Short Essay

This is What I Know About Art

Kimberly Drew, an art curator and writer produced the book "What I think Know aboutArt". This book discusses Drew's love for art and expresses how it has been a contribution in her life from a very young age. Art can be done and seen within a variety of things, which includes using ones creative imagination to express beauty, power, or simply feelings.  For Drew, art became a gateway for her to be expressive in many aspects. Lucky for Drew, she was raise by a family who valued creativity and is very adamant about pursuing what one is passionate about. Drew is known for amplifying the works of black creators because she understands how belittled and undermined an African American can be in the art industry and in general. Seeing this is simply frustrating, so it is very admirable how caring she is about African Americans getting the proper recognition in the Art community. An interview with ArtNet News, drew discusses why she decided to write her book. She mentions she wrote the book to ignite a fire for those who might be interested in art and might need a little assistance in guiding them to a space where they can be creative and show their love for art. I believe Drew's blog and book are perfect examples we should actively support the ones who are not seen in the art industry and beyond. There are so many creative geniuses that go unseen and it is misfortunate that happens, considering the fact that we need more creative people in this world. Drew is all for supporting, which is why she avidly posts new creations and new artist so they are not unseen.
Kimberly Drew and her book

Guerilla Girls

"Less than 5% of the artists in the modern art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female."

I chose this poster because the percentages of women artist that are exhibited compared to the naked female bodies in the art works are very striking because it is as women need to be objectified to even earn a spot in the the museum, which is misfortunate because there are many talented artist who shouldn't have to be nude to show case their talents.

"The advantages of being a woman artist artist:..."
I chose this second poster because clever and sarcastic some statements are.

Intervention 3 Performance/Protest

 Environmental Racism

For this intervention, I chose to discuss environmental racism. Environment racism refers to the way in which minority groups and neighborhoods are burdened with hazards that lower the quality of life. There are unhealthy circumstances they have no choice to comply with like an unhealthy workplace where poor workers are forced to work because it is their only way of making a living at the moment.  Environmental racism exists because those with sufficient resources and public notoriety refuse to aid in their communities, ensuring that there is a healthy environment. Environmental racism became a concept developed in the 1970s and 1970s in the Unites States.
A problem like Environmental racism should persist ever so here are some ways to help environmental racism according to Yale.edu. Practice self education when it comes to the pandemic and do some research on the local and federal policies that are designed to perpetuate these differences. Next, elevate the voices of impacted communities and support however you can. Try to donate and support as much as you can and put your best foot forward. Furthermore, hold representatives accountable for their environmental votes. Every vote counts and can be very impactful on one's community. Lastly, investigate the environmental practices of corporations we widely shop at, eat at, and learn at. Just an understanding of this impactful form of racism can aid severely in improving for the future.
To raise awareness on this topic, I decided to create a poster with my twitter handle so that people can discuss the topic on my page and it'll be an active forum. All ideas and opinions are welcome which is great for sparking many conversations.

Activism and Art Writing Assignment (Ian)

My final intervention will be about something close to me: my Filipino heritage. Pulling from a page from the multiple projects that have inspired me, I would like to create something that showcases Filipino artists. Filipino art is heavily influenced by Spanish and American culture. Although there is an abundance of Filipino art is displayed in Philippine museums, Filipino art is still not widely known. I have decided to showcase Filipino art through a social media platform as I would like to celebrate great Filipino art.

I decided to create this project because of the recent attacks happening on Asian-Americans. I, as a Filipino, have been terribly worried about my friends and family that are Asian. The Asian-American attacks are the result of the increase in racism towards the Asian community. I decided to make an intervention that was a way of saying, "I am proud to be who I am" in retaliation to the negative comments toward Asians.

I have come across projects that are similar to what I want to create, such as Filipino Art and Artists of the Philippines on Twitter. They use the social media platform in order to spread and promote various modern Filipino artists and their work. I would also like to use the social media platform to help us Filipinos remember our history, and celebrate the great Filipino artworks that exist. Twitter has a high user base and is a suitable platform that would allow me to spread my message; John Berger writes, "A person may notice a particular image or piece of information because it corresponds to some particular interest that he has." thus I would like to create a Twitter page that exists and is there to be admired and looked at, whether it stirs inspiration or not. I plan to post the more notable artworks of Filipino artists and artworks that strike interest in me. I have decided to use the same social media platform of Art PHand Artists of the Philippines as it would help me gain publicity and be easily shared.

Black Contemporary Art

Kimberly Drew's Black Contemporary Tumblr blog is a major source of inspiration for me. Kimberly Drew wanted to see more Black Artists in the world and decided to be the one that would place them there. She created a space where was able to curate and select various pieces of artwork made by black artists. She writes in her book, "I did not want Black art to be a negligible factor. I did not want Black art to disappear." (p. 21). In a similar way, I would like to create something that features Filipino artists as a way to celebrate Asian self-identity.

Guerrilla Girls collection of protests

Guerrilla Girls are a group that has uses signs to protest the toxic culture of sexism that is hidden in the art world. The Guerrilla Girls are noted as the "conscience of the art world" and have achieved that status with their use of art. The Guerrilla Girls political art has caused a stir in the art world, they have inspired me in such a way that I would like my project to hopefully create change in the world. Similarly, I find that memes, in a way are akin to the Guerrilla Girls work; Lizzie Fison writes, "More than just humorous interventions, these memes undermine the pretensions of power and respect politicians use as a de-facto method for quieting dissent and broadcasting their often contemptuous messages.". The Guerrilla Girls' protests art is an inspiring collection that spreads awareness and makes us look at the world and are memes before memes were even born.

God Bless Graffiti Coalition

The God Bless Graffiti Coalition is an activism work that combated the anti-graffiti trend that emanated in the 2000s. The God Bless Graffiti Coalition used brochures as a means of spreading awareness and educating people. The God Bless Graffiti Coalition has also curated a number of artworks from various artists around the world. In a similar way, I am creating a project that combats the Asian-American attacks by celebrating Filipino art; however, I am using Twitter as my brochure and Filipino art as my graffiti.

Intervention Poster / Intervention 2 (Ian)

"Stop Asian American Hate" four words that reflect the reality of the world we live in. The COVID-19 (or Coronovirus) pandemic has caused a stir in the political, economic, and social facets of the United States with the increase in Asian attacks being one of many examples. Asian American-owned businesses have suffered considerably more than other local businesses due to the prejudice surrounding them, with thoughts such as, "I will get coronavirus if I eat here" or "That Asian guy has covid, so I'll stay away". Such thoughts have caused a significant threat to the safety of Asian Americans, most notably, towards Asian American elders. Asian American elders or old people in general, should not be victims of assault as it is morally unjust and inhumane. Racism towards Asian people has always existed in America, although not as prevalent as racism towards Black Americans, racism is still racism; even if America is still trying to unshackle itself from its frequent habit it still has a long way to go in achieving a more peaceful America.

The poster is simple and can be done by anyone. I wanted the poster to be easily reproducible because activism is a community effort. Activism is about awareness and I want people to be engaged and be able to make a poster like this for themselves. Kimberly Drew mentions in her book, This Is What I Know About Art, that "Activism is a collective action and an investment in the lives of other people." (p.61). As such I wanted my intervention to be something that even a 6-year-old can make. It is important for the people to be able to be a part of the movement as it will greatly increase awareness of the topic being advocated.

Signs and protests have a long relationship with each other and are as compatible and complementary as salt and pepper. Signs and protests have been a pivotal part of activism events throughout history such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power Movement, the Disability Rights Movement, the Women's Rights Movement, LGBTQ Movements, and much more. Signs and protests will continue to be used in accordance with each other at future activism events. With the advance of technology, signs and protests have evolved and continue to live on the internet through memes. Benjamin Burroughs mentions, “The ability for the meme to empower and push back can be really powerful. They’re definitely sites of resistance against perceptions of abuse of power. They spread so quickly and evolve and transform, and it’s hard to shut them down in the way other forms of communicative protest can be silenced.”. Memes can be considered digital signs, in which they are images and pieces of information that convey a message to viewers. Coupled with powerful topics, memes are forms of protests in the digital age.

Let's Get Vaccinated

Many questions arise concerning cover and its latest vaccine. "Is the vaccination safe?", "What steps were taken to make sure the vaccine is safe?", and "how effective are these vaccines?" are common questions ask everyday. The curiosity is completely normal considering the fact that Covid-19 was a completely unexpected virus that became a pandemic and has taken million of lives. When the vaccine came around, there were mixed reactions of course, but most failed to see how potentially great this vaccination can be.

I created this poster to raise attention to the vaccine as well as raise awareness to the many benefits of getting the vaccination. Covid-19 can have life threatening complications and it is unknown to many how it'll affect one. I know we all miss being able to speak to each other without social distancing, being able to celebrate birthday with large gatherings, shop regularly, and even attend school mask-less. It could all be achievable with a simple vaccine. As mentioned before, it is very understandable that there are concerns about the vaccine and quickly they were developed. It is all for our best interest at health. My poster will encourage the many that walk through the walk ways of my hallways and doorsteps and beyond. Every year, thousand of adults become hospitalized over deseases that vaccines can help prevent. By getting vaccinated, one can help prevent themselves from unnecessary agony and suffering.

Intervention 3

“ We Use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose sexism, racism, and corruption in politics, art, film, and pop culture.” (Guerrilla Girls)

My Third intervention is a few of posters about people who have been wrongfully accused. “As of January 2020, the Innocence Project has documented over 365 DNA exonerations in the United States. Twenty-one of these exonerees had previously been sentenced to death.” (“Resources”). This issue is important because people are being put away with false evidence and statements. Investigations are not being fully investigated making sure that everything and everyone is taken into consideration. If we raise awareness by protesting having people look back into cases making sure that person that is being accused is the right person.

This is a picture of Antron McCray, 15, Kevin Richardson, 15, Yusef Salaam, 15, Raymond Santana, 14, and Korey Wise, 16 who came to be known as the Central Park Five. April 20, 1989 5 teenagers were accused of brutally assaulting a 28 year old woman. In 2002 the actual attacker Matias Reyes confessed and DNA evidence confirmed it was him. The Movie When They See us produced and directed by Ava Duvernay tells the story on Netflix. I would not have known about this story if it was not for this movie and made me think how many stories are like this. How many people have been wrongfully convicted and how many people have died because of false accusations.

This is a poster I created to state that before the police should be sure that the investigation should be look through thoroughly and they should make sure that the person they are putting away is correct.

essay 2

in my final intervention, I would like to talk about the racism and discrimination against a different group of people or communities which are black people and Latinos, and the LGBTQ community. One socio-political issue that affects the black community is the criminal justice reform: The criminal justice reform truly addresses the social issues problems affecting black boys and men, there must be significant reform to the criminal justice system. black men are drastically overrepresented in the prison. A data showed that 32 percent of the prison population are black but only 6% of the overall U.S population. black men are five times more likely to be incarcerated during their lifetime than a white man and they are more likely to serve longer sentences. Another social-political issue that affects black people is the improvement of the education system: as compared to black women, white men, and women, black men have lower levels of educational attainment. only about 28 percent of black men have a bachelor's degree or higher, while about 30 percent of black women, over 40 percent of white men, and nearly 50 percent of white women do. black men have fewer opportunities to receive higher education because those with a felony record fave limited access to federal student loans. many of the service providers within the educational system do not cultivate the full potential of black male students. another socio-political issue that black people face is the improving employment rates and opportunities: black men experience high unemployment rates, low labor forcer participation rates, and lower earnings than their white male counterparts. these trends are not only indicative of lower economic power, but also lower access to quality healthcare, and fewer social connections. Placed-based policies: in 2017, 26 percent of black households lived in high-poverty neighborhoods as compared to just 5 percent of white households. mentorship programs: for black boys and men have been a vital part of strengthening connections within a community. Providing young black boys with access to a black make role model has the potential to benefits them across several areas, including academic performance, mental health, socio, and emotional well-being. while mentorship programs should be promoted through public policy, the scholars emphasized that the approach must be deliberate. reparation, the final policy area suggested during the panel discussion were reparations to be paid to American descendants of slavery. the racial gaps present in wealth, income, health status, and employment.  reparation can be used to correct this injustice and to reduce the disparities that remain pervasive in society. LGBTQ COMMUNITY, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people face the family issues as their heterosexual counterparts, but that is only the beginning of that. the LGBT also encounters legal barriers to government recognition of their same-sex relationships to their own children policy use issues affection lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender families addresses partner recognition, parenting issues affecting children of LGBTQ families, health care, discrimination senior care, and elder rights, and equal access to social services. for my final intervention, i want to male something that connects these 2 communities and show the people that we don't need to make them suffer for our own problems.

Final Intervention (Nashelly Molina)

Link to the Lesson Plan:

For my final intervention, I created a lesson plan for kindergarten students because I am studying to become an Early Childhood Educator; and I will be creating a lesson plan in which kindergartners will be able to understand within their academic level. The lesson plan will be on the topic of diversity and how that makes each and one of us unique. Along with the lesson plan I will be reading them a book to them in which the title of the book is called "When God Made You", but before I read to them I will be asking them if they know what diversity means and explain it to them; and then I will read them the book. I feel like it's a great book because it's about how when we were created we were made differently and each of us have different skills, qualities, and are from different parts of the world and that's what makes us unique and special. It's about how different we are and that it's a good thing because if we were all the same then the world will be boring; and that no matter how different we are from one another we should all treat each other equally.

After I finish reading the book to them I'm going to have them do a "This is Me" worksheet which it includes for them to write their name, their age, their eye color, their gender and to draw a picture of themselves. Although, this worksheet is mostly known for the very first day of class but I decided to use it as a mini activity that can go along with what I'm teaching them about. After having them complete the worksheet I will be hanging it up on the wall so that when they see it they can know that everyone is different in their own ways and that everyone is special and unique. I feel like it's going to be a great lesson plan because it's going to be a great way to educate young children that no matter what ethnicity or diversity you are we should all treat each other the same, with respect and not discriminate one another. If you teach them young and from a young age children may be able to learn and know not to engage in those such things. So, the goal for this lesson plan is for children to understand the importance of accepting their own and other people's diversity/ethnicity and not to be judging themselves or others and engaging in bad behaviors.

The issue that has inspired me to do the topic on ethnicity/ diversity for my final intervention is the "Black Lives Matter Movement" and the "Asian American Hate Crime". So, the reason as to why I decided to talk about diversity/ethnicity and chose this topic is because I would like to raise awareness for everyone that has been discriminated due to their ethnicity/diversity; especially during these thought times. During these times there have been many groups of people that has been targeted with hate; so I'm going to be focusing on diversity/ethnicity because I feel like it has become on issue that we need to address. Covid-19 has made it hard for everyone and the fact that we have to deal with this deadly virus many people have to deal with the hate and threats people give them simply because of their culture. People have been targeting them for everything even if they never done anything wrong; sometimes they target a specific group and call them a "threat" simply because they are African Americans.

Although, they aren't the only group being target; there are many more groups being targeted but it's just an example as to why I want to address this issue and bring it to light instead of just hiding it and covering the problem because like that we aren't going to get anywhere with this. It's really upsetting because they have to deal with the abuse almost everyday without knowing the pain that they are causing them. At this point racism towards different types of diversity have taken a big toll ever since the pandemic started; even though this problem has already been an issue but, I feel like it got worse during covid19. So, this is the main reason as to why I have chosen this topic and decided to talk about it to bring it to light and to educate people on the importance on this issue. My message for the audience is to try to help them understand and to educate them that everything they say and do towards someone whose ethnicity or diversity differ from someone else can have a major effect on them and to help them realize how much their actions and words hurt them and others.

Currently, I haven't reached an audience yet, have received any feedback or have audiences engage with this project because I'm not working or know anyone that has younger kids; but I do plan on reaching an audience the day when I get a job or when I become a teacher. I would do this by following the lesson plan that I have created and maybe have them invite their parents to come join us and do a fun activity all together; or maybe also invite another classroom and their teachers and parents to join us. By doing so I would be reaching an audience and they would know more about the topic and how serious this issue is in our society; although I would not be reaching such a big audience but it will just be enough people to possibly spread the message to their friends or family members. If they do so, then more people will get to know more about the situation and know how important it is to bring it to light; because even though it isn't talk much about it's something that should be discussed because it affects millions of people. The day that I will teach this to young children I would hope it will be successful because it will mean so much to me if parents know more about what it is happening all around us and maybe like that they can teach and raise their children to respect others if they are different from them.

We all have similarities and differences but it's the difference that most people pick on but we have to teach children that our differences is was makes us all unique and special and to never engage in a behavior that can hurt someone else. The way that this project fits into my professional aspirations is because it's a lesson plan in which it is use everyday in school settings as an educator to help children understand a certain material. It is teachable and it is common because during certain months we celebrate different types of heritage months such as hispanic heritage month, black history month, woman history month and so on; so it will be a great idea if I teach children about ethnicity/ diversity because it is very common in school and the heritage months are celebrated during school months/ days which will connect very well to the lesson plan that I have created. Lastly, since we are in social isolation and everything is currently virtual and I can't access my project to an audience the way that an audience can have access is that once we are all able to gather together I can volunteer at several schools and teach the lesson to children. It's kind of impossible for audiences to access it because for the majority part school is virtual so the best way could be when we are all able to gather together safely.

The way that this project connects to the class readings is because for the majority of the readings we did in class talked about raising awareness to different types of issues. Some ways that they talked about how they have raised awareness to some of the issues discussed were through graffiti, protests, projects, interviews or talking about it in public and to a large group of people. Even though there were many ways that they have spread awareness but these are just some of the ways that were mentioned in the class readings and how each activist raised awareness towards something they wanted to address. So, my project does connect to the class readings because since I've created a lesson plan and going to be teaching it to young children I'm still going to be raising awareness of the situation I have chosen to address; and just because they are young they could still understand the main idea of it if you teach it at their academic level. By also having another classroom join in and by the end of the lesson the other teacher can get inspired by my lesson plan and they could also prepare a lesson plan of her own to teach it to their children and students; and maybe then they could also invite other classrooms to join and maybe then they will do the same thing and so the pattern will keep repeating; or maybe they will do a lesson plan that deals with something more specific like Asian American or African American and so on because they all fall on the same category. With this we as educator are still raising awareness to a topic that is very serious and very important in today's society and to many other people.

3 Quotes:

Siegler: Signs of Resistance:

1. "Honor King: End Racism!"

I chose this quote from Siegler: Signs of Resistance; and the reason why I chose this quote is because it connects to my project. The way that it connects to my project is because what I am trying to get out there talks about ethnicity/ diversity and it is a big issue in today's world. Many people have been racist towards other people because of their ethnicity, skin color, religion, cultural background etc. and it's something that has been going on for a long period of time. People have gather together to protest and raise awareness to the issue so that we can all finally end racism and be at peace and get along and to finally be treated equally and with respect. So, this quote also inspired me to do a lesson plan to teach young children because since they are still learning we can teach them that being mean to other people because of their different backgrounds or believes is wrong and that racism is never okay no matter what anyone else thinks.

2. "What is more moving? The words on the sign or the small hands holding them with popsicle sticks."

I have also chosen this quote from Siegler: Signs of Resistance; and the reason why i chose this quote is because it connects to my project. The way that connects to my project is that many people protest and go around holding up signs to raise awareness to an issue that they would like to address and wish for it to end but nothing it being changed. It also goes along with my project because although it's a lesson plan for young children and I teach it to them they might know that it's a terrible issue and they might say that they will never engage in those types of behavior but, later on in life they might or might not engage in those behaviors because as time goes on their mentality can change for the worse. So, just because I might be teaching it to children to raise awareness it doesn't mean that racism is going to end; it's still going to continue no matter what you do. Protests and doing everything you can to raise awareness to end racism are rising but the actions of racist people aren't going anywhere and instead of declining they are also rising; and no matter what you do or how hard you try racism is just going to be all around us. So, this quote inspired me to do a lesson plan because even though racism is still going to continue I would still love to raise awareness and spread the message on this topic because no matter how many times it's talked about it's still an important topic to discuss.

The Interventionists, Reclaim the Streets:

3. "We hope in the near future to make connections to pilgrims on similar roads in other parts of the world as well as bring out message to larger audiences on the radio and television via public service announcements."

The reason why I chose this last quote from The Interventionists, Reclaim the Streets; and the reason why I chose this quote is because it connects to my project. The reason why it connects to my project is because one day I do wish for all educator from around the world to do a lesson plan to teach young children or school age children about diversity and the importance of treating everyone with respect and kindness. Although, there may be many educators already doing this as a lesson plan but I would still love for everyone to teach it and especially to children because they are still learning and it can also have a positive outcome in which they may not engage in racism behavior. As I mentioned earlier as time goes by people's mentality changes it can be good or bad but I feel like if we educate every children from a young age there may be a great chance that they may not engage in those bad behaviors and few children who might get involved in those bad behaviors. But teaching them is one thing but parenting is the number one thing; parents should be able to teach their children that racism is never okay and it's a behavior that nobody should engage in. So, this quote inspired me to do a lesson plan because I would love for more educators to educate children on this important topic and even though there may be teachers doing it already but I would love it if we can continue to do it and engage other educators from other parts of the world to do so; by doing this we can share it on a bigger platform once the lesson plan has become successful for both me and other educators.

3 projects:

Title of the projects:

1. 2004 A preliminary guide to Public and Private Space in Amsterdam, 2001- Valerie Tevere

This project is about Valerie Tevere who was talking to people and interviews them as a way to get information about what she wanted to bring out. She created various things after she interviewed several residents in the area; Tevere even made things that could help people get around in the city according to the interviews that she made. So, this project inspired me because I felt like it's a great way to help out the city and the community; not only that but it could also help each other out. This can also be a great way to bring out important information or spread facts about serious issues that you're trying to get out there. It connects to my project because it's something similar that I am doing for my final intervention. Since this is about talking to residents about important issues and finding ways to help and spread awareness by talking about it; then my project goes along the line because I'm also going to be talking about it to young children and possibly their families if they were to join us. So, yes my project involves talking and addressing the issue with people and so did Tevere's project did as well. So her project and my project somewhat has like a connection in which it involves talking about the issue with different types of people; in my case it will be children and maybe their families and for her case it was residents from where she lives. The way that her project inspired my own project is because this is where I got my idea from; since her project involved in spreading awareness by talking to her residents then I thought maybe I could do the same thing but talking to younger children because I would be raising awareness and teaching/ educating them on this important topic and things that they shouldn't do and why they shouldn't do them.

2. God Bless Graffiti Coalition- 2004 On The 8th Day

The second project is about a bunch of graffiti on walls and it's the most common way of interventionists. Graffiti is a major way to spread awareness of an issue that someone is trying to address. Normally, it's painted on walls and on sidewalks with chalk or paint. We see graffiti everywhere and it's all around us; they're normally seen on sidewalks and walls and especially in the cities. So, I found this project to be inspiring because it's a very great way to spread information and trying to address an issue. It's a great way to spread your concern about this situation because usually if there's written or drawings on walls and sidewalks people are most likely to read it. This connects to my project because it somewhat has a similarity on what I am doing for my final intervention. For this project it involves art graffiti where people all over the world can see it because it's in the most obvious views such as sidewalks and walls; but for my project it involves a lesson plan in which a part of it I would make the children draw themselves and have them put their names, their eye colors, their age and their gender simple facts that can demonstrate that everyone is different and unique in their own ways. This can show them that no matter how different you are it's never okay to treat someone bad or disrespect someone because of their ethnicity/diversity. The way that this project inspired my own project is because instead of putting artworks around the city I will be placing them in the classroom in which students, families or even administrators can see and also learn about the issue. Even though it's a simple activity you can still learn from them and capture the biggest idea of the activity. So, this is a great way for other people to learn about diversity/ethnicity; even if it's in a complete different setting but I'm still raising awareness because teachers, administrators, students and parents can see them and will also learn about the importance of this topic/ issue.

3. Anti- Asian Racism- How to Help Stop Violence Against Asian Americans

The last project is about people gathering in large groups and protesting for what they believe is right and standing up for an issue they wish to stop. Protesting is the number one and most common way to spread awareness but, it can also be dangerous. Many people gather on streets and protest everywhere which can lead to chaos of polices trying to arrest protestors or them becoming aggressive towards others. So, I found this project to be inspiring because I feel like it's a great way to stand up for those who can't do it by themselves. Protesting is like a fight for change; they protest because they want to change how society views certain groups such as the people of color, the LGBTQ+, Asians, Muslims, etc. This connects to my idea because as I said earlier that by making a lesson plan I'm still raising awareness and educating people which in this case is young children. Although it doesn't involve protesting but it can gather large numbers of educators to do this lesson plan to teach children what's right and what's wrong and how it affects people that engage in these behaviors; and by doing so they might even talk about it to their families when they asks them what have they learned in school. So, the way the her project inspired my own project is because I want to gather and inspired educators to teach them to their students because it can be a great way for them to learn on diversity/ethnicity and how we should treat others. Even maybe the parents can also get inspired and learn more about it and teach it to other people like their neighbors or friends and like that they can come together to speak on the issue and raise awareness and bring light to this problem.

4 Artists

Artists that I chose from the book

1. Valerie Tevere
2. William Pope L.

Artists that I chose from my own research

3. Yoko Ono
4. Maya Lin.

The way that these artists address the issue is by using different types of things such as paintings, sculptures, media, photographs etc. The medium/ media that they use is that some of them use the media which is any form of social media in which they use it for activism and things like that. In my opinion there are many types of ways to spread awareness to a situation; it's not just protesting, social  media etc. there are much more things you can do to help raise awareness and engage audience. The way they gain an audience is by doing what they do like protest, paintings, sculptures etc. because like that people might get interested and join along or even better they might invite other people as well like a friend or neighbors and like that they will have a bigger audience. I feel like activism in art and outside of the art world is doing something that catches attention and spread awareness of an issue or a problem that needs to be discussed about. I also feel like it's about engaging in a type of way that people can protest and advocate for a problem that they want to stop. The artists connect to my project because they use all types of form to spread awareness to an issue they wish was talked more like through a painting, a sculpture the use of social media etc. and I am also doing a project that can also be a way to spread awareness and a way where it can be talked more about and in this case it's through a lesson plan which I can teach children about diversity and how to respect and be kind to each other and not be mean to one another. The way that they inspired my project is because I would love to talk about the issue and spread information about this important topic but with young children and other adults. They have also shown that there are many other ways to spread awareness to an issue we wish to talk about more and so I decided to talk about it with children because it can be great way for them to learn that this problem is real and they can learn to accept themselves and others no matter if our diversity is different from one another.

This is the book that I chose and read to them

This is the activity that I made them
do after the book I read to them

Images of me teaching:

Telling them about the book that we
were about to read and asking them
if they know what diversity is

Here you have me showing them the
cover of the book and telling them the
name of the book we are going to read;
and asking them what they think the book
was going to be about

Here you have me reading the book
to them and showing them the pictures

After I finished reading the book I gave
them the activity that I mentioned earlier
that they were going to do along with
some colored pencils

After they finished doing the activity I
went around and asked each of them to
tell me what they did/ drew

Right after I finished going around to tell me what
they did/drew I took them and I hung them on the wall
like I have mentioned earlier

Lastly, this is the end result with the kids looking
at the books and their activities hung up on the wall

Final Project

My final project decided to do a series of photographs inspired by Malick Sidibe, Seydou Keita, and J.D Okhai Ojeikere. They all documented the youth culture in Africa from their unique perspectives. Malick and Seydou documented the people around them and truly captured the essence and uniqueness of overlooked when it comes to Africans. J.D documented different hairstyles and textures all over Nigeria.
These works inspired me, and I always wanted to do a project inspired by these works. Although activism takes on many forms, what inspired me the most about these works is showing the true youth essence. Back then, African pictures were national geographic anthropology-style pictures, but those photographers' works indeed showed what life was.
The last couple of months have been immensely triggering how violence against black people is consumed and shown. For this project, I want to change that perception. I believe showing black people in their true essence is a form of resistance; it takes a lot to change how people have displayed through history.
Another reason for this project is bridging the Gap between the Africans in the diaspora and back home. Photographs are a great way of showing relatability and connection. The works of these men are timeless and will always hold meaning. What I hope to achieve with this project is to show the diaspora how connected they are always.

Final Intervention

 Environmental Racism

My final intervention all about environmental racism. I chose this topic for my final intervention because this had been a topic discussed on twitter for a couple of weeks. I was conflicted with topics like the pandemic or immagration, but environmental racism was an attention grabber for myself. Going through a casual scroll on twitter I came across a tweet that showed a TikTok of a girl who holds up a sign that says “Flint MI has been without clean water since April 24, 2014”. In the first clip she appears to be 12-13 years and in the following clip shows her holding the same sign where she’s significantly younger. Another user then quoted this tweet and briefly shares that there are other cities, with a majority black population, without clean water, which then sparked a conversation on Twitter about environmental racism.     My main message for my audience is that environmental racism is an actual thing and that it is not just a “simple” case of racism. The term environmental racism refers to how groups of minorities and primarily people with a low socio-economic background are challenged with numerous amounts of hazards, disrupting and polluting where they reside. Living like this can result in many health problems like cancers and respiratory issues. This occurs because regulations and safety precautions are not enforced for poor workers, primarily minorities, and simply because “they can”. We should question why minorities cannot be accommodated like a non-minority would.

I created a twitter account which acts like a forum for environmental racism and I wanted to create a space where it was open for discussion to all https://twitter.com/nvrnmntlracism . I chose twitter as my outlet because it is one of the best platforms where one can market and educate, dually. My latest retweet is about a young girl, Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, a nine year old girl who lost her life do to air pollution. Her mother then and currently is fighting a great fight to make clean air a human right. Ella's mum, Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, has since campaigned for tighter regulations on air pollution limits

Hearing Ella's story was heartbreaking for me because I know she had so much more to live for and for her life to be cut short by air pollution and which was an unfortunate case of environmental racism. This project in particular fits into my professional aspiration and portfolio because It has allowed me to use a platform like twitter to become an interventionist. As a future social media marketer, I was able to experiment with what tactics and posts work best for an Audience that resides on twitter. All in all, the fight for environmental racism shall continue until we have a solution for this pandemic.

Final Intervention - Krystal M

For my final intervention I created a podcast. The podcast is available by the link, as I have posted it to facebook and shared it with some close friends.

Podcast on Rape Culture:

The podcast consists of seven sexual assault victims stories which Ive placed together. I have also incorporated a few statistics about sexual assault and violence from the RAINN website. (Rape Abuse Incest National Network). https://www.rainn.org

Stats
1. The ages of 12-34 are the highest risk years for sexual assault.
2. Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.
3. Suicidal and depressive thoughts are more likely after a sexual assault experience.
4. Approximately 1/5 of American Women reported completed or attempted rape.
5. Every nine minutes child protective services receives claims of attempted child abuse.

Rape Culture: Stereotypes, ideas, understandings that target women for their experiences.

Inspirations
 1. April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, so this topic was a great fit especially considering my past interventions with rape culture, cat calling.
 2. The Guerrilla Girls.
 3. Throughout the last few months, I've seen many posts on social media addressing rape, and rape culture. Below are some of the posts I've encountered.

Quotations
