Performance (Intervention 3) LIZ

INTERVENTION 3 PERFORMANCE/PROTEST

I found this project to be a little challenging because I am quite an introvert and performance does not come natural to me.
Inspired by one of my class mates, Isabel, and her poster project I decided to create advocacy and draw attention to the immigrant community. I was born in Mexico, brought to this country illegally and raised by two Mexican immigrant parents, so this subject is very personal. I know about many of the difficulties faced by this community, and there are many! It makes me sad and angry that still young children are facing such cruel and unjust treatment because of decisions not made by them. As of March, 2021 US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents were holding more than 15,500 unaccompanied children in custody. The Department of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has said these camps, which are often compared to jails or warehouses, are "no place for a child". At least 5,000 children have been kept for over 72 hours, the legal limit after which they are meant to be transferred to the custody of health officials in the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
I decided to create a couple of shirts in which my sister and I ran around town in, when and if someone commented or complimented the shirt, I stopped to explain the advocacy behind it and provided them with resources/ links to help this community.  I also posted  a story on social media and placed a link in my bio to an organization helping migrant children with legal processing at the border. This issue deserves support and visibility, inspired by the Guerrilla girls, who protest and perform for justice in the art world; I think this is a community worth advocating for and finding solutions for the challenges they face. By using performance, statistics, and providing resources to get others involved, I hope to expand on this project for my final intervention.
