Oil painting came about during the rise of capitalism. If one had money they owned oil paintings. If you had money you had the power to live. In the picture above it is an oil painting of Mrs.Siddons. She appears to be wealthy and fortunate. She does not inspire envy because she does not depend on the admiration of others. Oil paintings make people want to be like what is shown. People like being who they are, but still aspire to be like someone else. Publicity images cause viewers to have certain reactions. Oil paintings have a way of creating a vision of how culture wants to see itself.
