IMMIGRATION:
For my final intervention I decided to create a painting based on the issues that revolved around immigrants living in America. Immigration is a huge topic that reflects on immigrants' struggles, risks, and sacrifices that they make in order to live a better life. I have chosen this topic because I am invested to show immigrants point of view and thoughts about hoping to seek a better life in the United States such as job opportunities, better education, safer environment, and better homes. I can relate to this topic because I come from hispanic immigrant parents who hope for my sisters and I to seek our "American Dream". This is why I am passion about this topic because I can relate it to my parents and me known as Mexican American. Able to have the privilege to live in a country with many opportunities such as education. The painting that I created doesn't symbolize towards hispanic only ,but also all immigrant races. The form of outreach that my painting tells a message about immigrants are human beings who desire to live in peace and freedom in America.
The message to my audience is to speak up against immigrants being locked up on unsanitary conditions and crowded spaces. Especially now because of the COVID-19 it can be easily spread. Sadly the place immigrants are put into cages are inhumane. I believe my painting can represent the immigrant community as human beings who thrive for a better life as all we do as Americans. Our race shouldn't be symbolize as a threat or elimination from being part of United States. In order for my painting to be spread to the community I decide to placed it in Hamilton Park. Hamilton Park is a place where many tourist, photographers, and family gatherings usually appear to see the skyline New York City. I believe my painting can prove a message to help our immigrant community towards seeking the American Dream. Immigrants should be able to seek freedom and peace in United States rather than suffering imprisonment.
I decided to leave my painting in the park for about two hours and come back for it. The feedback I received is that I saw my audience observing my painting such as families and people. Hopefully, my audience can take photos on my painting and spread the word online or social media. My painting can make a difference by inspiring other activists or artists like me to spread the word towards immigration policy.
The project fits into my professional aspirations because since I am becoming a teacher I want to bring awareness towards our immigrant community in school. Since I will be teaching in urban schools where I will experience diversity classrooms. I want my students to feel comfortable and welcoming despite their race. I will be able to incorporate multicultural education into my teaching. I want my students to feel equally treated with the same respect as their peers. I'll let my students speak their primary language and not only English. My painting is a huge symbol towards schooling because young immigrant children come here in the United States for good opportunities in education. Immigrant parents who hope for their sons and daughters to have careers in the United States.
The artists who have inspired me to make my own project are Kelly Latimore, Favianna Rodriguez, Armando Minjarez, French artist JR, and Michelle Angela Ortiz. They all connect into my artwork because each project shows how immigrants are innocent and not harm humans who seek for a better life. All the projects show immigrant families hope their children can get the American Dream. Every immigrant parent is willing to take a risk to cross the border even if it's not specifically the border ,but it is for a safer environment and filled with opportunities. Letting the audience know that we immigrants do not come to harm or eliminate people to seek their dreams. Immigrants have dreams as we all do. All people should be welcome to equal opportunities.
