For my final Intervention I want to continue being an Anti- Racism Activist. Ever since I was young I have always found it upsetting how there are so many people who are racist, and I feel like if people don't speak up and defend each other we will never have equality. This class has taught me that I should not keep quiet, and that I should fight for what is right and not allow what is wrong (racism). I know that sometimes it is rough to talk about racism because for most of us it hits home but if we don't speak about it who will. So with that being said for my final project I am thinking of making a sculpture of a colored skin woman that has went through racism in her life and how it has affected her emotionally and physically.
I want to make a sculpture (clay) of a African American women that has gone through racism. When I think of women that have gone through this I can only imagine how much pain they are in. The pain that they carry on through life is because of injustice. These women are usually abused physically, and verbally which affects them mentally. I want to create this sculpture to show how racism has taken a negative toll on these women mentally.
In the article Medical News Today"What are the effects of racism on health and mental health" states that "racism or discrimination based on race or ethnicity is a key contributing factor in the onset of disease. It is also responsible for increasing disparities in physical and mental health among people of color" (P1.). So in 2015 they conducted a systematic review and got the results of 300 different studies that allowed them to "look at how racism affects the physical and mental health of African Americans and others. It was noted that mental health was affected and it caused "depression, stress, emotional distress, anxiety, PTSD, or even suicidal thoughts" (P.1). The article suggests that they can try and cope with racism by talking about what they are going through, instead of "bottling them up" because if they talk about it with people they trust it can probably help them "process feelings of stress, anger and frustration" (P.1).
