Activism and Art Writing (Nashelly Molina)

For my final intervention I would like for it to focus on Asian American hate crime. This issue inspires me  because I want to spread awareness for Asian Americans especially because of what it is happening right now. Recently, all around the world there has been hate crimes against Asian Americans because of the covid19 pandemic. Asian people have gotten so much hate that it went from being verbally harassed to physical assault. They have often gotten blamed for starting and spreading covid19 but what they don't realize is the pain that they're putting them through; not only to them but to their families as well. Former president Donald Trump have stated and named the virus as the "China virus" or the "Kung flu". Overall, Asian American are dying and getting hurt everyday because of racist people thinking that Asian people are the ones to blame.

This is a problem that should be stopped because it going to get more severe and more chronic due to the fact that they are not only attacking man and woman but they are also targeting elderly people. Some people as well don't want to buy things that are from china or made in china; others don't want to eat foods that are from china or Asia etc. On social media platform Chinese and Asian people have been shamed and harassed for the things they eat; they might say that certain things that they eat is how another virus will come, that's how the coronavirus was made etc. Things like this I have come across on social media and it's really heart-breaking how they are also being targeted for the things or what they eat. I feel like is important to address this issue because I feel like Asian people can't even enjoy life because of all the hatred there is. People have also been scared and terrified walking on the streets out of fear of getting harassed or discriminated etc. Overall, this haven't just be seeing right now it has been going on for a very long time but I feel like because of this pandemic things are getting out of hands.

As I mentioned in my other intervention posts this pandemic has claimed the lives of so many people but it's also claiming the lives of Asian Americans. Just like the BLM movement has gotten very big and has been a lot of protest the same thing should happen for Asians. Although there has been protests about it but I feel like they should do it more often like the BLM movement, but we all have to come together and help support them and join them in the protest. Wether they like it or not we should all stick together and help fight racism against the Asian Community. We should all learn to love each other and help each other in situations that is hard for everyone. In this case like the pandemic is where we all should reunite, care and love one another and take care of each other.

So, I decided to do Asian American hate crime for my final and last intervention to spread awareness and to bring light to this situation to help stop it. I'm not yet quite sure of how I would like for my final intervention to be like but maybe doing a series of posters and include pictures of what is going on with Asian Americans, make graffiti or write on the side walk and walls because I realize how people tend to read them, or maybe talk about it in public and educate those who don't know much about the issue and those who would love to be educated about it. The 3 projects that I chose can help address the issue, and are some techniques that I can use to explore what I'm trying to get out there.

Titles of the projects:

1. 2004 A Preliminary guide to Public and Private Space in Amsterdam, 2001- Valerie Tevere

This project is about Valerie Tevere who was talking to people and interviews them as a way to get information about what she wanted to bring out. She created various things after she interviewed several residents in the area; Tevere even made things that could help people get around in the city according to the interviews that she made. So, this project inspired me because I felt like it's a great way to help out the city and the community; not only that but it could also help each other out. This can also be a great way to bring out important information or spread facts about serious issues that you're trying to get out there. It connects to my idea because it's something that I had in mind about doing for my final intervention. I was thinking about talking to the residents in my area and interviewing them. I planned on asking them questions about Asian American hate crime, letting them speak and let them talk and express their opinion or concerns they have towards the situation, asking them how they feel about it or what they wish to do to help stop Asian American hate crime and help stand up for the Asian community. I also have the idea of talking about it in general out in public; including both myself and the residents in my area. By doing this I feel like we are educating everyone about how serious this issue is. I also feel like we are also educating those people who don't know much about the issue and those who want to be educated on this serious topic.

2. God Bless Graffiti Coalition- 2004 On The 8th Day

This second project is about a bunch of graffiti on walls and it's the most common way of interventionists. Graffiti is a major way to spread awareness of an issue that someone is trying to address. Normally, it's painted on walls and on sidewalks with chalk or paint. We see graffiti everywhere and it's all around us; they're normally seen on sidewalks and walls especially in the cities. So, I found this project to be inspiring because it's a very great way to spread information and trying to address an issue. It's a great way to spread your concern about this situation because usually if there's written or drawings on walls and sidewalks people are most likely to read it. This connects to my idea because I have also thought about making art graffiti around my neighborhood to spread awareness to Asian Americans for my final intervention. Making art graffiti would be a great idea because I have seen many drawings on sidewalks and people have stopped and read them to see what it says. So, I thought if people stop and read them then maybe I should do the same thing. I thought that if I do art graffiti about the issue then maybe others will read and will start making art graffiti as well. I felt that it's a great way to spread the message because it's in a public area and it's where a lot of people will come and see them or read them. By doing this many people will lean about the issue and my want to engage in activities to help stop Asian hate crime.

3.  Anti- Asian Racism- How to Help Stop Violence Against Asian Americans

This third project is about people gathering in large groups and protesting for what they believe is right and standing up for an issue they wish to stop. Protesting is the number one and most common way to spread awareness but, it can also be dangerous. Many people gather on streets and protest everywhere which can lead to chaos of polices trying to arrest protestors or them becoming aggressive towards others. So, I found this project to be inspiring because I feel like it's a great way to stand up for those who can't do it by themselves. Protesting is like a fight for change; they protest because they want to change how society views certain groups such as the people of color, the LGBTQ+, Asians, Muslims, etc... This connects to my idea because I have thought about making series of posters and carrying it around as a sign to raise awareness to a certain issues. I have thought about this and I felt like it's a great way to raise awareness because it has been seeing everywhere and people will most likely join in because they would want to help fight for change. Protesting will not only help fight for change but it can also bring people together and help each other out in difficult situations. So, I felt that by doing this we can all come together and protest to help spread awareness to the Asian community and to help stop the hate and violence against them.

4 Artists:

The two artists that I chose from the book are Valerie Tevere and William Pope L. The other two artists that I chose from my own research are Yoko Ono and Maya Lin.

The way that these artists address the issue is by using different types of things such as paintings, sculptures, media, photographs etc. The medium/media that they use is that some of them use the media which is social media in which they use it for activism and things like that. In my opinion there are many type of ways to spread awareness to a situation; it's not just protesting, social media etc. there are much more things you can do to help raise awareness and engage audience. The way that they gain an audience is by doing what they do because like that people might get interested and join along and sometimes they might even invite other people as well and by doing that they will each grab a big audience. I think that activism in art and outside of the art world is doing something that catches awareness and attention of an issue or a problem that needs to be discussed about. I feel like it's about engaging in a type of way that people can protest and advocate for a problem that they want to stop.

3 Quotes:

Siegler: Signs of Resistance:

1. "Honor King: End Racism!"

I chose this quote from Siegler: Signs of Resistance; and the reason why I chose this quote is because it relates to the issue that I am trying to get out there. Asian American hate crime is a type of racism against the Asian community. Racism is a huge problem that till this day we are trying to end it and to finally be at peace and get along. So, I chose this quote because my final intervention is going to be based on Asian hate crime and to spread awareness to help stop racism against the Asian community.

2. "What is more moving? The words on the sign or the small hands holding them with popsicle sticks."

I also chose this quote from Siegler: Signs of Resistance; and the reason why I chose this quote is because even though we all protest and hold up signs nothing is being changed. Meaning that protesters keep getting bigger and larger protesting everyday but the words that are on the signs have no type of movement because racism is still happening. So, I chose this quote because the signs that everyone is holding moves quickly as people protest but the words on the signs doesn't because racism is still there.

The Interventionists, Reclaim the Streets:

3. "We hope in the near future to make connections to pilgrims on similar roads in other parts of the world as well as bring out message to larger audiences on the radio and television via public service announcements."

I chose this quote from The interventionists, Reclaim the Streets: and the reason why I chose this quote is because racism and hate crimes against our community has been getting out of hand lately. Protestors are getting tired of nothing being changed so they want to get the message out to everyone from any part of the world to help protest to stop the racism there is against other people. So, I chose this quote because many people want and hope their message reaches other people to help fight for change and a better future.
