Susan Sontag: Excerpt from On Photography
1. "Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it".
2. "Finally, the most grandiose result of the photographic enterprise is to give us the sense that we can hold the whole world in our heads -- as an anthology of images. To collect photographs is to collect the world".
John Berger: Ways of Seeing
3. "It suggests that if he buys what it is offering, his life will become better. It offers him an improved alternative to what he is".
4. "Being envied is a solitary form of reassurance. It depends precisely upon not sharing your experience with those who envy you. You are observed with interest, but you do not observe with interest- if you do, you will become less enviable".
"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it".

The reason why I chose this image is because it relates and connects to the quote above. This particular image was taken during "The Great Conjunction" when both Saturn and Jupiter were close to each other and was able to be seeing through the naked eye. This quote states that if someone tells you something that seems a little hard to believe then they aren't going to believe you and they'll just start doubting you; only because they don't have prove if what you're telling them is true or not. In todays society we need to have proof of something whenever telling someone anything; it can be either a video or a photograph because that's the only way someone can actually believe you.
In this case this picture shown above relates to the quote I chose. Although, I know for sure that everyone knows about "The Great Conjunction" because it was all over the news but I'm just going to give an example that relates to this picture. For example, let's just say that "The Great Conjunction" was never talked about or appeared nowhere in the news, internet and web browser; and I end up telling people how last night I saw and got to see Jupiter, Saturn and it's moons together. Nobody in their minds are going to believe me; why, because nobody else saw it, it wasn't talked about or mentioned, and because I didn't show proof that it did actually happened. If I pull up a picture that I did actually see Jupiter, Saturn and their moons and show it to them then that's when they are going to believe me and will know that I was telling the truth; only because I have shown them a picture that proofs I'm not lying. So, what I'm saying is that since it is very rare for this to happen and if you say something like that without having proof it's just going to sound made up and you're just going to end up getting doubt. Everyone knows and believes that "The Great Conjunction" did happen because it was on the news and it was everywhere; most importantly there was proof that it did happened, there were videos and pictures of this phenomenon. To summarize everything, you will need to have some sort of proof whether is a video or a photograph when you're telling something to someone that seems unbelievable because then nobody is going to believe you or just anything in general. The point is that a video or photographs are the only thing that can show proof because without them there's no proof that something actually happened. This is how the quote I chose above relates and connects to the picture that I chose above.
