Quotes:

"Being envied is a solitary form of reassurance"

"But in the sense that money is the token of, and the key to, every human capacity."

                                              - John Berger, Ways of Seeing, Chapter 7, p. 143

"To collect photographs is to collect the world"

                                               - Susan Sontag, On Photography

"Photographs, which fiddle with the scale of the world, themselves get reduced, blown up, cropped, retouched, doctored, tricked out."

                                                - Susan Sontag, On Photography

"But in the sense that money is the token of, and the key to, every human capacity."

The photograph connects with the quote through the depiction of the two students passing by other children of the same age. The photo shows how the separation between those who can afford to go to school and the ones who have to work to make ends meet. The photograph has certain striking elements that embody the meaning of the quote, such as the lack of shoes on the feet of the working kids and the difference in the clothes between the students and the working kids. The uniforms the kids are wearing gives us an idea, a sense that these kids have the capability to educate themselves and build their future while the kids wearing no shoes makes us assume that they do not want to or do not have the ability to wear shoes or anything to protect their feet. The working kids are working in order to attain the money they need to buy food, water, and other supplies. It is the way people have to live in order to secure their means of survival. Money grants us the ability to satisfy our basic needs for survival and allows us to pursue our dreams and ambitions. Nothing is free in the world; money allows us access to all the things we need to live.
