My
final intervention is about celebrating Filipino Art. I chose this sort of
project in order to celebrate my culture amidst the recent violent attacks on
Asians in America. Filipino Art is a representation of the Philippines' various
cultures and although there exists an abundance of different art forms (basket
weaving, wood carving, tailoring, dance, etc.) I have chosen to display
paintings and other similar artworks as they speak more to the viewer and
depict the era they were drawn in. There is a possibility that I branch out
from paintings but as of now I would like to celebrate the wonderful works of
Filipino artists. As such I have decided to create a Twitter page because of its
user-friendly interface and its reputation as a massive social media platform.
Twitter is a large social media
platform that has a high user base and a high ability in spreading awareness. With
the usage of this platform, I would be able to spread my intended message during
these troubling times. The spread of information is crucial in activism, as
Kimberly Drew (2020) wrote, “Activism is a collective action and an investment
in the lives of other people.” (p. 61). The Asian American attacks during the
COVID-19 pandemic has made me aware of the disturbing reality of the world thus
in an act of protest I have decided to take a view where we celebrate our Asian
heritage and celebrate who we are as a people. With that said, the best way (in
my opinion) to connect with people is through a large social media platform
such as Twitter.
I would like my final intervention
to convey the message of celebrating heritage and culture; the essence of taking
pride in where you’re from, where, and how you were raised. The rise in racism
towards the Asian community has been an issue that has really come to my
attention and hit me close to home. Being an Asian myself and having family &
friends that are Asian it is very concerning to me that there is a real possibility
that they could be attacked or assaulted. I want to spread the message that comments
and prejudice do not define a race, rather it is the values and traditions that
are passed down through the generations that define who we are. I want my
intervention to intervene by showing the world that we are not defined by
society.
Although I may have created this
project, I cannot say that its conception was born purely from my mind. Various
artists and their projects have inspired me to create this project, notably
Kimberly Drew, the Guerrilla Girls, Artists of The Philippines Twitter
(@ArtistsOfThePH), Filipino Art Twitter (@FilipinoArtPh), and the God Bless Graffiti
Coalition. These artists and their projects inspired me to do mine as they all
are similar to what I wanted to create. Kimberly Drew’s Black Contemporary Art
tumbler blog inspired me to make something that celebrated my own heritage, the
same way she did when she wanted to see more black art. The Guerrilla Girls use
signs and posters in order to protest against the injustices of the art world,
which have made them known as the conscience of the art world. Artists of The Philippines and Filipino Art are projects that are already promoting Filipino
excellence by sharing the works of modern artists. The God Bless Graffiti Coalition
collected graffiti from the streets of major cities in order to spread to the
world the truth of graffiti. In the same way, I chose to create something that
showcases the truth about the Philippines.
