I chose to watch the documentary “minimalism,” because it is a concept that I am intrigued by. It describes the story of a man who had a life that most would consider to be a good life, with a wife, a six figure job, and a good physique. Many people would have even killed just have that life. However he started to spiral out of control, when his mother died and his marriage ended, both in the same month.
He began trying to make himself happier with his money and many different material possessions. However he came to realize that all these things were only feeding his anxiety and depression, as none of them did what he expected them to do. It was at this point that he came across the minimalist movement, and dug into it for the first time in his life. He started small by eliminating things like his TV from his life, and began to feel more freedom as he did so. He found this also gave him much more clarity on life and his decisions.
One of his best friends saw his unique lifestyle and wondered how this guy was so happy. Being a bold and courageous guy, he decided to join his buddy in this lifestyle. They then started a website and a podcast, to share their ideas and experiences with others. They then started going on tours and doing interviews with various people, and made a much greater impact than I am sure they ever imagined. It is fascinating to see where they started and where they ended up, and I respect the courage it took both of them to do what they have done.
