Guerilla Girls quotes + pictures (Joseph Castella)

"Why is the Museum of Modern Art more interested in African Art than in art by African-Americans?"

"We had to use the most repugnant word we could think of to condemn them."

This quote from the guerrilla girls is very powerful and thought-provoking. It really jabs down to the very core of institutional racism and indirect conflict against minority artists within our community.  The fact that they raise the question of why African American artists are being ignored while a museum floods its walls with African art, is very important and must be heard. I think this question must be asked more and must be illuminated to ensure that we do get an answer to the problem at hand as well as we solve the problem at hand. We can not just sit back and think this is normal minority artists do have a right to be heard and a platform to express themselves. Museums should take the context of this message from the guerilla girls and lay out a path for African Americans to exhibit their art. African - American art is our art and our history and we shouldn't have to beg for them to have a space in art galleries. This quote personifies the movement for equality in today's history and I believe there is no better time than now to ask these questions.

"We had to use the most repugnant word we could think of to condemn them."

This quote speaks volumes within its simplistic message. It calls out those against quality and freedom as well as those who think violence and ill sought actions will help solve issues within the world. The powerful tone of having to search for the nastiest and dark word to label a person or movement is a great undertaking. If you are going that deep to use such a word then the party on the receiving end of the context must be as dark as possible. Only pure evilness and hatred can earn such a word and energy towards it. I find this quote so moving but disturbing in the fact that in today's world we still have such vile people and organizations living amongst us. We must do whatever we can to instill peace, not hatred.

Picture 1.

The top picture is very interesting and almost satirical because they took a poster of presidential marches and public affairs and turned them into events in which were fake but aligned with extremists groups and events to represent the former president. It talks about the past of peace and prosperity under past presidents and the present being filled with hatred and racism under Trump. I found this image very powerful under one expression that we as Americans are allowed to post a picture and protest such as this one. Activism is very important and one skill that defines who we are as Americans.

Picture 2.

The second picture calls out democracy and its current flaws within the system of voting and representation. I think it is good to know that there is still work to be done within our society and country. While we are the greatest country on this earth and the beacon of hope and freedom we still have much to do and much to achieve. One of the biggest things is to ensure we are all represented in policy and we all have the chance to have our voices heard and counted for in voting. Being heard is important and essential, we must all strive to ensure that future generations are successful and feel included in our country and its operations.
