In the documentary "Banksy Does New York" it shows the artwork that Banksy created in his residency in New York for one month. While being a famous yet anonymous British artist many people started to question his true talent since he never had created art in the place where graffiti is the most prominent, New York City. He would create one piece of artwork everyday and then post it on to his website which created a scavenger hunt for an entire month. People would gather around these locations to take pictures, but many times this would cause problems. Due to his controversial art style some people would become offended. Not only would people take offence, but this also sparked the conversation of gentrification. One person in the east of Brooklyn started charging people $5 to take a picture and asked "Y'all would come here if this wasn't here?" Even being charged that amount people would still take the pictures which just proved his point.
This documentary really showed me that people will do anything for money and the hype of things. There was an example where Banksy had an older man selling his paintings as a regular street vendor for only $60. No one paid him any mind, so he only made a few sales. Once everyone found out that they were made by Banksy these pieces were worth over $250,000. It's sad to think about because in reality there are so many talented people in the world who are overshadowed because of people's need to follow every trend. If Banksy didn't have the name he had people wouldn't even pay $60 for his art. This was a powerful message because people should have minds of their own when it comes to any form of art and Banksy was shining light on that topic. Banksy knows his worth so he rather make a statement then to make a profit out of things like many other people would.
