Artist (Tim Okamura) +Selfie (Faith)



   

 "Strong" - Tim Okamura

    Tim Okamura was born in 1968 in Edmonton, Alberta. Tim is a Canadian artist.  He attended Alberta College of Art and Design then later attended the School of Visual Arts. His paintings are featured in several films. Tim's paintings are also on display in collections in several places. I chose him as an artist because he stands out to me the most. His art consists of people who look just like me. He incorporates graffiti, oil painting, figure painting, hip hop, and mythology, to create a masterpiece of African Americans in urban settings.

 In the picture above it’s a lady who reminds me of myself. She’s of color and she is flexing her muscles. Which symbolizes that she is strong. I chose this selfie of me because I’m of color just like her. In life, I’ve gone through more than someone can think of, but I did everything but fold. I’ve prevailed through every obstacle that was in my way and came out stronger than when I went in each and every time. In today’s world being of color is extremely hard. We have to work 10 times harder than others. This doesn’t make me back down, but it gives me a reason to go hard and to never settle. I am strong. I am black. And I am proud. 

Happiness

Fasola Gideon is an artist that wants to make positive impacts and change people's life. He states that the inspiration behind his work is to appeal to the mind, feeling, experience of life, proverbs, and humanity. 






I chose this pick because of the pure happiness that I feel comes off. Happiness that people can relate to where it is not based on others and material things but based on self. 





Artist (Marina Abramovic) + Self (Jakela Gamble)

 

Marina Abramovic is a 74-year-old performance artist, writer, philanthropist, Serbian conceptual, and filmmaker. Born in 1946 in Belgrade, Serbia, she is best known for her vanguard performances that uses her body as both a subject and vehicle. In the picture above, Abramovic stood still for 6 hours as she allowed her audience to use 72 different objects laid around and do whatever they wished. The title of the picture is called Rhythm 0. This artwork was used as a test along with other pieces in her Rhythm series to test her body's endurance and physical limits. In doing so, both the subject (Abramovic) and the object (the 72 items) became incorporated as artistic action while exploring the capacity of conceptual art.

I chose this picture of myself because not only did it take me almost the same amount of time to create such a thing, but it also embodies the message behind Rhythm 0. It surrenders my control over life and allows others to use me as they wish. Abramovic wanted to show constructed trauma through her performance with the audience and show that by submitting can result in exploitation. As such a powerful message, I had to make one of myself to exemplify those feelings.

Artist and self

 

The Artist that I chose is Nancy Otrovsky. She portrays the sport of wrestling in a way that it is not usually presented. Her paintings exhibit the mental and emotional feelings that all competitors in the sport experience at one point or another, in a very majestic way, ironic to the brutality of the sport as a whole. 


This photo gives a good visual of the things that I mentioned about the painting in a real life setting. The actions and expressions in the photo show a lot of things without even having to say anything. It basically describes my whole journey in this sport the best way possible without me verbally telling a story.

Mr. Bbaby + Liz

 

    I have chosen the artist Michelle Ruby Aka Mr. Bbaby, she is a Latina painter & muralist. I chose her because her work inspires me, reminds me of my heritage and brings me joy. She uses vibrant colors, and characters in her art to create pieces that are surreal and playful. A big inspiration for her are Piñatas which symbolize celebration in Mexican culture. Piñatas were originally made filled with seeds to grow crops in the garden. The artist and myself resonate, with the idea that although they are meant to be broken, they bring growth.

    I chose this artist because I feel represented in her work. I connect and understand it. I do feel her work is a form of activism. By representing the Latinx population and drawing large scale murals of these experiences it gives us a space in the community. It adds beauty and value to the Mexican experience.

Greta Thunberg
 
    



Me



    Greta Thunberg is an 18-year-old Swedish environmental activist that inspired an international movement for climate action. At the age of 15, Greta skipped school in order to protest at the Swedish Parliament, urging Swedish leaders to take climate action. Soon, other students followed her lead and held protests around the world, leading to her founding the FridaysForFuture movement. Greta has since been invited to multiple conferences urging not only the leaders in her own country but political and financial leaders around the world to take climate action. Her speech at the United Nations Conference (U.N.) September 2019 in New York City included striking words such as "How dare you!" directed towards the ignorance of world leaders towards climate change. Greta has been fearlessly clashing with world leaders and continues to raise awareness about the harmful effects of climate change, often mentioning the words "mass extinction". Greta has received numerous awards and was TIME's 2019 Person of the Year.


    Greta inspires me because of her ability to directly speak out to big figures in the world. Greta displays fearlessness packaged with a sense of the deterioration of the world. Greta's story is inspiring due to the fact that she is simply a person that wants to help the world, from skipping school to protest at the Swedish Parliament to creating an international movement and becoming one of the most well-known environmental activists at a young age is amazing. Greta is a prime example of how simply caring and taking action towards an issue can bring global awareness and a call for action.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter, born in 1907 and descendant from German and Spanish parents, known for her self portraits and realistic work inspired by the nature and objects of Mexico. She was one of the most revolutionary painters within the last centuries. Her life as a painter started with a traumatic accident that caused her multiple injuries, she saw art as an escape from all the pain and agony. Frida Kahlo's paints express true emotions and are based on her reality, what she experienced and what inspired her to became an artist. I chose this artist because she is a great example for all women around the world and because she overcame all her obstacles and transforms them into something beautiful, that has inspired many people worldwide and has helped them to connect with their inner self.




 I chose this picture of me because it shows true emotions, such as freedom and happiness; this picture describes exactly how I was feeling at that moment, happy.  Kahlo's portraits make people connect with themselves in all ways, Just like nature makes me connect with myself emotionally. Frida was surrealistic because she only painted her reality, and I relate very much to that because I am very realistic and I always try to show my real self to others and most importantly to myself. 

Artist (Pablo Picasso) + Self (Luke Andaya)


        The artist behind this particular painting who I have chosen is non-other than Pablo Picasso. Known for his distinctive artstyle using cubes and other geometric shapes, he was one of the greatest artist to ever live during the 20th centuary. Born and raised in Málaga, Spain, on October 25, 1881, he was raised by his mother and father whom the latter was an painter and an art teacher. When he was young he always had a sketchbook with him to draw and create whatever came too mind, and he was so good that he was admitted to a prestigious art school when he was young. 

                  Years later, he would become who he was as Picasso and was even credited with creating a new art style called analytic cubism. This form of art style is shown above with his most famous piece of work named Guernica. Being one of my favorite pieces of work from him, the reason why I chose this piece of work by him is because of the message that it carries. As a direct response to the bombing attacks of Guernica by the Nazis all the way in 1937, Picasso successfully portrays the image of the tragedies of war, loss, and death in his creation. Picasso's creation had gained monumental status as it quickly became a reminder of the aftermath of war and what it brings, and had even become a symbol of peace and anti-war. 

                This inspires me because it really does represent what I believe in; which is peace between us humans, regardless of gender, skin color/ethnicity, or even nationality. Because in the end, we are all one human race and if we keep fighting and dividing ourselves like how we are in current times, we could all end up like what is shown in Picasso's work if we do nothing instead of working with each other.

The artist I chose was Tite Kubo, He is the artist and creator behind the popular Japanese anime Bleach. Its intricate storyline and characters that is somewhat relatable to teenagers who are going through physical, emotional, and mental changes in their life. 




Kubo's work is displayed in my everyday life because as I progressively get older I realize that I am changing over the course of time and developing an adult mindset from paying bills and having multiple responsibilities or priorities that take up most of your life.

    Berthe Morisot was a French painter, she was born on January 14, 1841 in Bourges, France. Unfortunately she passed away on March 2, 1895 in Paris, France. Berthe Morisot was a member of the circle of painters in the "impressionists. In 1864 she exhibited for the first time in the highly esteemed Salon de Paris. After that her work was selected for exhibition by six subsequent salons. The picture I chose is a painted picture of the Artist Berthe Morisot. I was inspired to choose this artist because she has a story that I enjoyed and caught my attention.
     I chose a picture of herself that is painted because I wanted to share her story. I tried to capture her appearance from her painted picture of herself to the picture that I took of myself. Berthe's story caught my attention because it said that Morisot was born in Bourges, France, into an affluent bourgeois family. This meant that It was commonplace for daughters of bourgeois families to receive art education, so Berthe and her sisters Yves and Edma were taught privately by Geoffroy-Alphonse Chocarne and Joseph Guichard. My favorite part of her story is that because her sister and her were art students they were close to each other. So Berthe and Edma worked closely together until 1869, but then when Edma married Adolphe Pontillon, a naval officer, Edma moved to Cherbourg, and had less time to paint. Then Edma and Berthe always stayed in contact with each other by sending each other letters. Edma wholeheartedly supported Berthe's continued work and their families always remained close. Edma wrote “I am often with you in thought, dear Berthe. I’m in your studio and I like to slip away, if only for a quarter of an hour, to breathe that atmosphere that we shared for many years…”.

    Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist best known for his provocative political pieces displayed in public settings around the world.  He often plots his pieces in secret and creates them in locations where all can see, forgoing the tradition art gallery glass or a website pay wall. His art work often criticizes the hypocrisy of society, of it's greed and violent misuse of power. His pieces are often considered social commentary as they focus on real problems faced by struggling people. 

    Banksy inspires me as an artist because I feel that he is is unafraid to depict the harsher reality many of us choose to overlook. Banksy's art is more or less a reflection of us, an introspective of society and it's hypocrisy. His pieces are pact with raw human emotion and symbolic imagery. We can relate to the muses in the work because most look like they can be our our brothers, sisters, parents, friends, etc. His pieces are ephemeral, never meant to be auctioned off or permanent. I believe it is these quick glimpses of ourselves that inspire many to seek change before their own time runs out. I strive to be as much as an activist as he is and I hope that I can do so through my artwork. 



Artist (Basquiat) + Self (Lourdy)

     Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Haitian and Puerto Rican artist born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He was born on December 22, 1960 and later died on August 12, 1988 from a drug overdose. While Basquiat was alive, he has painted many pieces that included the crown pictured above. According to Basquiat, the crown symbolized how royal his influencers and heroes were, which included artists, writers, musicians, athletes and so on. In addition to this, Basquiat used the crown to attack western histories and depict himself as a king. 

    I chose Basquiat's painting "Crown" because I believe it is a form of activism as well as reminder to always think highly of myself just as he did. One of the things Basquiat is well known for his cheerful and inspiring personality which I can also relate to. This piece overall emits Royalty which is another reason I was inspired.

Art & Self


    J. Howard Miller was an American artist during World War II. He is famous for the "We Can Do It" poster, which supports women and their involvement in the war efforts. Miller would be considered a graphic artist. The poster was made and released in 1943. The primary purpose of Miller's piece was to promote and support feminism in war times. Interestingly the post was not as popular during the early 1940s but was extremely popular in the 1980s. The photo made its way to a magazine cover and a postage stamp. According to some research, there are a few speculations about what Miller intended the poster's message to be for women. One of the photo's potential messages was to empower women to work harder during the war, and on the other hand, the opposing message was to encourage women to join. 

    Millers' work inspired me because, before the research, I  firmly believed that the photo was meant to inspire women. As a young adult in America, there are still many areas within our government that need to be more supportive and inclusive of women. Millers' work demonstrates strong women with her muscles and what seems to be a confident attitude. To me, the poster indicates that women can achieve greatness. Although Miller is not widely known, it is nice to see a taste of colorful art with such a strong intention.

         The reason why I choose Frida Kahlo is because her artwork represents her emotional or physical pain, empowerment, identity, and indigenous culture. Frida Kahlo paintings carry a message of her suffering throughout her life. She has been through depression such as losing her father, an accident that caused her to have multiple surgeries and illnesses in her lifetime. Also, her miscarriages and eventually divorce with her husband Diego Rivera due to him having many affairs. One of my favorite paintings from Frida Kahlo was the “Tree of Hope, Remain Strong”. In the painting it shows how she felt extreme lasting pain in her spine and no longer felt the strength to live on the left side. While, in the right side it showed she had hope, faith, strength, and courage that everything will go out well.

Frida inspired me to stay strong despite the terrible circumstance that may come in my life. She showed me that expressing your feelings is a good way to feel better. Able to have a mind of a warrior you can overcome obstacles. She made me embrace my Mexican culture and not be ashamed of it. She had the bravery and courage to show her feelings and personal life in her paintings. Which she made me feel I wasn’t alone. It motivated me to have faith and courage within myself. The reason why I have a passion to become a teacher because I want to motivate my students in school to succeed their goals or dreams.

ARTIST + SELF (naomi)

 

 Vincent Van Gough is one of the most well known artists of our time. However, during his time (1880s) he was simply a misunderstood artist. People would criticize the style of his art because they weren't used to it. He continued to pursue his dreams regardless of people's opinions, but that wasn't enough to put food on his table. His passion drove him insane because no one understood him. He became very depressed and even cut his own ear off. Throughout his entire lifetime he didn't know the legend he'd become years later. 

I took this selfie of myself in the comfort of my own room. My own happy place. I resonate with Van Gogh's painting because at this age people will judge you solely for being different. Over the past years I've learned to be comfortable in my own skin and embrace my differences. People's opinions of you don't define who you are or what you're worth.

The great Leonardo Da Vinci is known for one of his most popular paintings, the 'Mona Lisa'. This painting is perceived as “archetypal masterpiece” that has been around since 1517. He is a renaissance Italian painter, inventor, and practiced with science and a couple other subjects. However, most of the subjects he would cover are inventions including cartography, painting, and paleontology. Anatomy, astronomy, and botany. 


Leonardo was a very intellectual man with multiple talents and hobbies. For a Polymath he outsmarted his generation with his anatomy artwork, breaking down the makeup of the human body. As hard as studying such a subject he was also a great inventor, which I have related to since I was young, I have been interested in robotics and constructing materials were always one of my hobbies. Therefore, I Leaned towards science as one of my favorable subjects as well due to the structural integrity. Learning about Da Vinci growing up influenced me to avoid falling under society's mindset of only settling for one hobby or work setting.

As a bisexual Latinx, I was drawn to Frida Kahlo. I relate to her bravery and fearlessness to stand up to injustice and through her art and political activities to be the voice of the voiceless. When she was just 6 years old, she suffered from polio and suffered a violent bus crash at age 18 that would lead to health and fertility problems for the remainder of her life. She had a revolutionary spirit, despite her physical limitations.

She was not ashamed to paint taboo subjects surrounding her body, including miscarriage, in vivid detail. During the bus crash, injuries suffered to her pelvis, neck, and uterus caused Frida to suffer several miscarriages throughout her life, which she explores in paintings such as the 1932 piece "Henry Ford Hospital." Here, after a miscarriage, her nude body is portrayed on a hospital bed. Frida was a feminist,artist and activist and an inspiration to me and many others.

 I chose this artwork of the emperor Napoleon. who made this artwork was a French artist Jacques-Louis David 1748-1825. David placed the sword on the chair to allude to Napoleon's military success, while the prominent display of the word "code" in his papers, suggests his administrative achievements. Other decorative details—the heraldic bees and the fleurs–de–lys—are symbols of French absolutism, and imply Napoleon's power as ruler.


this artwork definition is one of the reason if my inspiration. one thing I studying to be a police officer and after that to be a detective. it inspire me because of the success that Napoleon had being a military. I want to be as big as he was being a police officer and being a detective.

    The artist I chose is Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece which is one of the most popular manga/anime of all time. One Piece centers around the world of pirates and offers up nothing short of amazing storytelling, world-building, action and it's unique set of diverse characters. 







    Oda's work resonates with me because of his unique style and creativity. As a media arts major, I hope to one day be on my own level of creativity and find the unique style that best fits me whether it be with photography, editing or one day making my own movies in the industry.

Artists ( Michelangelo) and Self ( Joseph Castella )


 

   The artist I chose to analyze is Michaelangelo, a renowned artist of the 13th century from Florence Italy. His work is most famously displayed above the Sistine Chapel ceiling within the Vatican of Rome, depicting the creation of adam and eve (mand kind). His paintings resonate with me on a personal level due to the intimate depictions he created about life and the celebration of our history as human beings. Michelangelo also interests me on a level of faith due to me being a chalothic, his artwork showing our steps within the faith and our connection to God amazes me. By looking at his paintings especially the one above I feel like I am involved in the event watching it unfold in front of my very eyes.  


How this also resonates with my own background and history is through his depictions of angels and the "protectors" of members of the faith. I am a firefighter and I feel a sense of association with his meanings behind those depictions as firefighters in this world are here to help and protect people from tragedy. I feel that through my passage of life I can see myself in the place in the paintings and view it in a unique aspect. The selfie I pasted below depicts my rendition of a creation depicting the battle of light and dark, similar to the style the artist above creates. My image is of modern technology but looks a little weathered and old, I feel it brings out questions beyond my words and allows for a window into my life.

Acts of Resistance: Activists, Interlopers and Pranksters

SPRING 2021

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a course about media subversives: people working outside of mainstream media institutions who nonetheless find creative and provocative ways to use the media for cultural, political, and/or economic critique and resistance. Over the course of the semester, we will examine a range of "alternative" media phenomena.


Activists + Interlopers + Pranksters will engage social analysis and cultural critique to examine and reflect on the media influences that effect (or distort) and inform (or misinform) our communities and culture. This course places value on being meta-aware of the relationship between culture and creative production within communities, as well as the necessity of being socially conscientious citizens.


This course uses culture studies and social analysis to investigate the myriad ways in which individuals, groups and subcultures use creative productions to perform and manifest ‘acts of resistance’ against the hegemony of western Eurocentric culture, dominant societal institutions, and class/power structures. The course will examine the American consumer culture and unpack the influence capitalism can have on communities and the production of culture and sub-culture.


The goal of this course will not be simply to romanticize "outlaws", nor will it merely condemn them as criminals or troublemakers. Instead, it will focus on how and why such figures struggle against the global "media monopoly" so that students might come to a richer understanding of the nature of the media's considerable political and cultural power, and the ways that ordinary people can engage with powerful cultural institutions as active participants, innovative creators, and powerful critics. 


This course encourages a broader consideration of citizenship by thinking critically about the relationship of images, values and ideals in a highly complex visual world. Conscientious citizenship is also honed by examining cultural forces and the effect they have on personal and social values and ideals. Students will think critically and complexly about issues of media, culture, politics, and how creative productions can influence these.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING

Our class time will be split between discussion, lecture, and presentations ON ZOOM.  While in discussion please be respectful of the opinions of others even if they stand diametrically opposed to your own. You must be in class ON TIME and prepared for class each week. Failure to do so will be reflected in your participation grade. Failure to do so consistently can lead to failure in the course.

READINGS Various weekly reading assignments will be assigned from the required texts and linked on the blog. The full reading schedule will be distributed on the class blog. Readings are due each week. All readings are REQUIRED unless otherwise stated. 


CLASS PARTICIPATION and READINGS Attendance is mandatory. Attendance and participation in the class discussion is part of your participation grade. Weekly reading assignments will be assigned from your required texts, posted to Blackboard and/or linked on the blog. The full reading schedule will be distributed on the class blog. Readings are due each week. All readings are REQUIRED unless otherwise stated. For each week’s readings you must select two quotes or passages from each of the readings and write a brief reaction to each quote (1-2 sentences). [Some weeks you will also be asked to select a specific art project that strikes you from that week’s readings. You must briefly describe the project, the context and the artist/collective/collaboration that created the project or work and why you responded to it.] I will often collect these through Blackboard. Please have them typed up each week so you can access them during class and submit them on Blackboard if requested. I will call on students each week during discussion to read and discuss these quotes. You must have these prepared for each reading for the Zoom discussion sessions.


WRITING ASSIGNMENTS Two short essay assignments that draw on the class readings will be due during the semester. These will be explained in class and will be described in detail on the class blog. The assignments will be submitted by posting to the class blog.


ART AND ACTIVISM SEMESTER PROJECTS

This is a four-part project that asks students to think about and research the database of current events and social issues. Look to issues, artists, movements or citizen actions that exemplify act of resistance. We will be highlighting many during the semester. Using the readings and resources of the course as a way to make a critical argument, create a project that acts as advocacy, intervention, performance or amplifies a social issue of your choice. Look to other art projects, artists and movements to inspire, and connect to your own interventions.


The goal of this multi-part assignment is to get you to take a stand on a significant issue(s) related to the course material and then to highlight and support past or current acts of resistance. In order to be a conscientious participant in community and society, one must attend the current events and important social/political struggles of current times. Race relations, gender equality, social justice, health care, reproductive rights, privacy, corporate regulation, marriage equality, religious tolerance, LGBT rights, etc. are all examples of issues citizens have engaged in acts of opposition and resistance, using any number of creative strategies.


INTERVENTION 1-3: In response to the artists, issues and projects we discuss and learn in class, students must design and create art activism projects that are directly inspired by projects that they learn in class. Each project will be in response to a particular artist's work or several artists works. These short projects will explore art advocacy and intervention. The projects will allude to physical and public interventions but can be created for the purposes of this semester to be interventions during isolation and social distancing. The projects will involve the creation of a meme, a performance and a photography/video project. These will be assigned and specified in class and on blog.


INTERVENTION 4 FINAL: Choosing any one or combination of processes that you have explored during the semester design and create an extensive art intervention. This can involve any combination of approaches and media. The project should connect to your own ideas of advocacy, social justice and resistance. Through an oral, written and visual presentation of your artwork you will make a case for why this act of resistance is important, timely and worth engaging in and promoting.


Consider and research extensively and thoughtfully the history and development of the issue you have chosen. The themes and topics of the course have had a recurring history of friction within America’s culture and institutions.You will need to describe and explain the strategies that have been used and are now being used to engage this issue and explain how the example you have chosen to highlight fits into the larger issue. Be sure to research extensively and thoughtfully in choosing your project. You must connect to the work of other artists and activists in your presentation. You will present the research and historical background, supporting your artist(s) or movement(s) along with the project. Your project should coincide with your own professional ambitions. Projects can be performance, social-engagement interactions, community interventions, video/photography, print/poster, painting, sculpture, audio and sound projects, and other forms.


Final projects will include a writing portion that explains the project and presents the research. The writing project can take the form of an online article, an essay, a blog, a website, tumblr, or even a podcast. Students can present ideas outside of this list if they would like to propose other ways of presenting their writing for this assignment.

GRADING

Attendance is mandatory and all assignments must be finished and handed in on time to receive a passing grade for this course.


60% semester projects 

20% 2 blog posts 

20% attendance/participation (Contributions to class discussion, on the class blog + attendance)


COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will:

1. Develop an objective understanding of visual communication practices.

2. Value judging, appropriation, and cooperation as strategies for creative problem solving.

3. Correlate the role of information and visual design to cultural production as a means of mass influence.

4. Interpret the difference between cliché and archetype, cultural construct and stereotype, representation and signification.

5. Create alternative strategies for cultural interactions as a means to disrupt common interpretations.

6. Integrate social and empirical research into projects.

7. Consider creative problem solving as a way to invent solutions to real world problems.

8. Engage substantially with a significant social, cultural, and/or political issue.

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY

You are not to risk the health or safety of yourself or any of the other people in the Art department. To ensure safety strictly follow all safety procedures explained to you as well as the New Jersey City University regulations. If you have any concerns or questions or are ever unclear about proper safety and health procedures, then ask the instructor or appropriate authority.  

If you feel you have any special concerns or problems that you would like to address please feel free to bring them to my attention. If there are any health concerns, either physical or psychological, that may affect your ability to fully participate in the class or complete assignments I am available to discuss possible solutions or address any of your concerns.
